What happens to personal data when you use hiiu.eu or hear from us.

Who is responsible

hiiu operates this site and decides what happens to personal data collected through it. Personal data is processed in the European Economic Area.

Using this website

The site has no login and sets no cookies. We measure which pages get read, how far down a page people get, which of a short list of things get clicked, and whether leaving an address worked. That measurement is anonymous: it is never built into a profile and it does not identify you. If you leave an address, what the measurement records is that the form worked, never the address itself.

Because nothing is stored on your device, there is no consent banner to click. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in knowing whether the site works. Any tracker blocker stops the measurement, and the site behaves the same either way.

Our hosting provider separately logs what any web request produces, including your IP address. That is what makes serving a page possible.

Leaving your address

The form at the bottom of the front page takes an email address and nothing else. If you give us one, here is the whole of what happens to it.

• What we hold: the address you typed, and the date you typed it. No name, no company, nothing about the page you were on when you did it.
• Why: to write to you once, when there is something you can run. Our lawful basis is your consent, given by submitting the form.
• What we do not do with it: we do not send a newsletter, we do not write repeatedly, we do not use it to find you anywhere else, and we do not give it to anyone.
• How long: two years, unless you ask for it back sooner. Submitting the same address twice does not restart that.
• How to withdraw: reply to the one email, or write to us before it arrives. Consent is as easy to take back as it was to give, and we delete the address.

The address sits in our own database, on Amazon Web Services in Ireland, and it does not leave the EEA. Amazon is our processor for holding it and reads none of it. Nothing on the form tells you whether an address is already on the list, which is deliberate: that would make the form a way to ask whether a particular person signed up.

If we contacted you first

We write to a small number of people about their own open-source work. If that is how you found us, we hold your name and email address as they appear in the commit history of a public repository you contributed to, along with anything you write back. That commit history is where we got your address.

We use it to ask how design and engineering work at your company, on the basis of our legitimate interest in researching a product for that audience. We keep it until you tell us to stop, or twelve months after we last spoke, whichever comes first. Reply and say so, and we delete your details and do not write again.

Who else handles your data

Our hosting and content delivery provider, our analytics provider, and the ordinary business tools we run the company on, such as email and the system we keep contacts in. Each acts on our instructions and only for the purposes above. Personal data from this site is processed in the European Economic Area. We do not sell personal data, we do not share it for advertising, and there is no advertising on this site.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct or delete it, object to our use of it, ask us to restrict it, or ask for it in a portable form. We answer within one month of a request.

If our answer does not satisfy you, you can complain to your national data protection authority. In Estonia that is the Andmekaitse Inspektsioon.

Customer source code

Hiiu the product reads a repository to build a copy of it. That is a separate relationship from this website, it only happens for customers who ask for it, and it is governed by the agreement we sign with them rather than by this page. No repository is read because you visited hiiu.eu.

Changes

When this text changes the date at the top changes with it. We do not quietly revise it.
